Ring Cutter

2022

A project I worked on with the Public Security Directorate (PSD) in Jordan, a device to cut rings that are stuck on injured fingers.

During the first meeting with the PSD, we were amused to learn that the Civil Defense Department receives more than a 100 calls per year from people having rings stuck on their fingers, which can cause serious injuries and require immediate attention.

The available ring cutters they use are manual tools that are sufficient to cut most rings, but not enough to cut rings made of harder metals like Steel. In similar cases, they would use a cutting tool like a Dremel, which has a high risk of cutting through the skin of the person wearing the ring.

After several meetings and ideation workshops with officers from the Civil Defense, I designed a power tool that has a safety guide and provides proper grip and user experience for the officer performing the operation of ring cutting.
